This living room was cold and cramped. The large blank exterior wall called for a warm built-in fireplace and shelving unit that would free up floor space in the room and make room for a big comfy couch. Our solution was to construct the world’s smallest room addition, or “bump-out” on the exterior wall to accommodate the fireplace and shelving. The pump out, which hides behind a large rhododendron on the home’s exterior, has its own shingled roof that is 4 feet deep and 20 feet wide. We constructed the from vertical grain fir that we salvaged from a Simpson Lumber Mill office in Shelton. This wood had been painted purple so we had to mill it several times and sand it very well. The fireplace mantle is a solid piece of wood from an old pickle barrel. We used non-toxic lacquer to protect the wood.
